FOOD
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided daily by our team of experienced chefs. Each meal will provide for a vegan and vegetarian option for those of you who have listed that on the dietary restrictions section of your application. Other allergies and concerns have been taken into account as well, however, we encourage you to talk with our chefs if you have any other serious food concerns.
If you find that you are hungry between meals we encourage you to stock up on your own snacks. Each room has a kitchenette with mini-fridge, sink and microwave, so you can store and prepare food for yourselves. There are nearby grocery stores and if you find that you need to pick something up but don’t have a car, you can talk to us about catching a ride when we go into town, which will happen rather frequently.

WHAT’S NEARBY
Steuben (pictured) itself is an extremely small town with 2 bars and not much else.
Boscobel is the next closest town and is about a 15 min drive from the lodge. There are a few hardware stores and an art supply store that carries very basic art supplies. There is also a craft store which carries fabrics. Also in Boscobel are gas stations, auto body shops and a few fast food restaurants. Other nearby towns include Fennimore, Montfort and Prarie Du Chien. Please note that if you will be needing any specialty item or supply, you should bring it with you.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind:
Unfortunately at this time there are no pets allowed at the residency. Due to the presence of other animals (cats and dogs) and to the liability they represent, we ask that you please leave your beloved furry friends at home.
We will be sharing space with Bob and Rosa, the property owners. Because of this, we ask that you observe quiet hours in the sleeping quarters from 12midnight – 7am. There are plenty of other spots that you can hang out or work in on the property during this time.
Some of the buildings on the property are a bit further from the main campus. Staff will be able to drive you back and forth if needed, but we encourage you to bring your bike if you can. While mountain bikes are a bit more preferable, the majority of the route to these other buildings is actually a major road, so any bike will do. In particular the recording studio is about a 10-15 minute walk, but is only a couple minute bike ride, so if you are planning to use this facility a lot you may want to bring your own bike. We will also have 3-4 bikes for you to share, and of course can for sure help drive gear back and forth.
The property is scattered with creeks and springs. The water coming directly from the ground here is actually certified potable water. On site is a small pond stocked with trout. If you are interested in fishing here please come talk to us first. Additionally very close by is the Kickapoo River and a bit further, the Wisconsin and Mississippi Rivers. In town you can purchase a fishing license for rather cheap. The Kickapoo has a few spots nearby that are ideal for swimming, complete with a rope swing, and there are places to rent canoes or other small boats if you are interested.
The farm is home to a large collection of miscellaneous furniture, knick knacks, salvaged material, and other items. For the most part we urge a “look, but don’t touch” policy when it comes to the rooms used as storage. However, if you see something that would work perfectly for your art making, come talk to us, we may be able to make use of some of these items.
Cell phone reception is spotty and unreliable on the premises. A landline is available for emergencies. There are nearby hills where reception is better if you need to make phone calls.

Hi, I was wondering if the nearest grocery store is walkable from the residency? Is Steuben where we will be able to buy our food? Will there be some type of communal meal now and then (bbq)?
Hi Anja,
I’m sorry if it wasn’t clear, but all meals will in fact be provided. We have 2 excellent chefs who will be preparing lunch and dinner each day using ingredients from the local farmers and Amish communities. Each meal will provide an option for vegans and vegetarians. Breakfast will be continental style- meaning each morning an array of fruit, pastries, cereals, coffee, etc will be set out for you. So every meal is essentially communal, especially dinner.
Steuben does not have much to offer in terms of groceries. There is a small grocery section in one of the bars where you can get your basic items like milk and eggs. There is a grocery store in Boscobel, the next closest town, about a 15-20 minute drive.
Thank you, that answers my question. Sounds wonderful!
testing….
awesome!
only 16.5 miles to the muddy river
sounds like a sweet bike trip!
Maybe I missed this somewhere, but is there laundry on site? It would be nice to know, if I can pack less stuff.
Thanks!
Oh yeah, also what about a bike pump? I can bring a small one to share if there isn’t one on site.
There is laundry on site, but it is only one standard size washer and dryer set (shared by 40+ people), located at the furthest studio building. We ask that residents keep their use of the washer at a minimum.
We do have one bike pump, but it would be great if you could bring another.
Thanks!
We’ve just been notified that the washer is not working. There is a laundromat in the nearby town of Boscobel.
is there no bedding at all? im flying in and not there long and dont know if i can fit it in my stuff
Hey Denise,
We can round up something for you, but generally we ask that residents bring their own bedding. Please just remind me when you arrive.
Thanks!
Emily
